WELCOME TO ABRUZZO, THE ENCHANTED LAND

Located in the centre of Italy, circa 200km from Rome, the Abruzzo Region is well known for its wild landscape, characterised by high and rocky mountains that descend rapidly to the coast.

Within this breath-taking domain, between the Gran Sasso and the Majella Mountains, there is a series of hills upon which the organic farm Chiusa Grande is situated.

    NOCCIANO

Grape variety / Trebbiano, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon e Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The vineyards in Nocciano are laid out around the winery covering an area of 15 hectares at an altitude of 200-250 metres.
Here the land has a high clay content and is rich in trace elements, creating its sub-alkaline reaction.

Here we grow Trebbiano, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and various clones of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, including our own mass selection characterised by widely-spaced bunches and elongated thick-skinned grapes.

    CUGNOLI

Grape variety / Trebbiano, Pecorino, Malvasia, Bombino e Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The farm in Cugnoli, intersected by the Regio Tratturo L’Aquila-Foggia trail, has 17 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 200-250 metres, divided into several plots with varying exposure and chemical and physical properties.

It goes from north-facing hilly terrain, rich in clay and limestone where we grow the Trebbiano, Pecorino and Malvasia varieties, as well as our selection of an old native variety, Bombino. Then there are flat clayey-sandy plots with 5-10% stone content, through to hilly soil rich in clay and silt facing southeast, where we grow Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

    LORETO APRUTINO

    Vitigno/ Trebbiano, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The farm in Loreto Aprutino is divided into two bodies each 6 hectares large. One side, growing Montepulciano, is located at an altitude of 300-350 metres on the south-east facing slope of a clayey-sandy hill with a high salt content, as seen by the presence of badlands in the surrounding area. The other side of the farm, at 400 metres, has a strong presence of limestone in the soil, and is located on a hill ridge with two plots: one facing north growing Trebbiano and one facing south with old Montepulciano d’Abruzzo plants using the ‘tendone’ method.

    CASACANDITELLA

Grape variety / Trebbiano, Malvasia, Cococciola e Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

The farm in Casacanditella covers 11 hectares at an altitude of 300 metres, on a hill overlooking the valley of the Dendalo river. Here the soil is medium-textured and slightly sandy with high temperatures, given its proximity to the Majella mountain range and its southwesterly exposure. Here we grow the Trebbiano, Malvasia, Cococciola and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo varieties.

    CAPESTRANO

    Grape variety / Malvasia e Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

In partnership with the Farm Gioele Ciccone in Capestrano, circa 2km from Forca di Penne, we run an experimental vineyard at 880mt of altitude.

    .

In rich clay soil, stony and deep, we cultivate our special selection of black Montepulciano and our elongated Malvasia grapes.

The high altitude, the proximity to the sea coast, the extreme temperature variations and the constant exposure to wind makes this area perfect to produce high quality grapes with unique organoleptic features.

These characteristics also make this vineyard one of the highest and most difficult to work in Abruzzo; we aren’t wrong when we talk about “heroic viticulture”!
