Set among the rolling hills of Abruzzo and surrounded by the Gran Sasso d’Italia and Majella Mountains, at Chiusa Grande Organic Farm Rocco D’Eusanio, his son and grandchildren represent the winemaking tradition of their family, looking towards the future whilst honouring the past.
At Chiusa Grande traditional values and ethics are more important than profit. Our organisation is committed to transparency with respect both for nature and for our customers. To date, we are one of the most highly certified vineyards in Europe for eco-sustainability.
VINOSOPHIA AS A GLUE
BETWEEN PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE
A FAMILY DNA
"Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed."
CHIUSA GRANDE ORGANIC FARM
Chiusa Grande and its 60 hectares of vines is located in Nocciano (Pescara) in the heart of Abruzzo.
Surrounded by the Gran Sasso and Majella Mountains, the organic farm was founded in 1991 by the agronomist Franco D’Eusanio, who is now known as “Vinosofo” and “bio-innovator”, acknowledging his full embrace of the principles of organic wine production.
Wine production at Chiusa Grande respects the principles of the “Vinosophia”, Chiusa Grande’s philosophy of wine.
To uphold our traditions whilst researching new wine-making techniques, Chiusa Grande worked with local universities and research facilities (CNR) to create new wine labels such as In Petra (natural wine made in white stone containers from Pietranico, Pescara), Natura (three different wines made with the total absence of sulphites), Integro (organic sparkling wine made with the classic production method and an absence of sulphites) and D’eus (organic sparkling wine made with the classic production method using only native grapes from Abruzzo).
What is “Vinosophia”? “Vinosophia” means only using production techniques that are available in nature (organic production).
When our wines are made, three main production principles are taken into consideration: grape must hyper-oxygenation, very low use of sulphites and partial or full malolactic fermentation.
Extended to cover an area of over 3000 square meters, the space dedicated to the production process (250sqm) occupies two buildings that include the bottling – both glass bottles and wineboxes – and the packaging lines, a laboratory for chemical and microbiological analyses, and the technical tasting area (75sqm).
Working at Chiusa Grande means to be a part of the D’Eusanio family and sharing their values by respecting nature. All the employees are ambassadors of the company and this helps the D’Eusanio family to succeed in their mission.
Chiusa Grande is, first and foremost, a “universe of values” in which ethics are more important than profit.
To honour our commitment to running a transparent business, we have sought the following certifications:
European Organic Certification
Certifying the quality of production at all stages and assuring that it is carried out directly by local organisations officially authorised by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and the European Commission.
The “Associazione Italiana Agricoltura Biologica” guarantees compliance with a production protocol that is even more stringent than EC standards, especially regarding sulphite use.
Guarantees that the organic product does not contain any trace of animal products.
International Food Standard
Certifies that any food production is made in a safe and high quality environment.
Since 1998, the Global Standard for Food Safety protocol guarantees compliance with a high standard of production for quality.
Guarantees compliance with procedures and with audits of the organisation’s production stages.
Establishes the company’s commitment to being identified as a business capable of developing an environmental management system.
Issued by the Italian Ministry of Environment, this certifies performance and commitment to sustainability across the full vine and wine production line.
